Plugged In, Tuned Out

 Prologue —Suggestion to Study

It had been a while since I returned to blogging—a space where I once poured my thoughts freely, transforming every observation into stories, essays, and meaning. Picking it back up again wasn’t just about writing; it felt like departing to a new platform within me that had been closed for some time.

Then came the second challenge—unexpectedly from someone close to my heart. My aunt commented a classic suggestion: “Write about Gadgets—Boon or Bane?” At first, I’ll admit, I felt stuck. It sounded so textbook, so overdone—like every essay prompt in every school exam. And I didn’t want to write another predictable piece listing pros and cons like a robot. I was tense. This wasn’t my usual style anymore.

But then, the writer in me whispered: “What if you looked deeper? What if you peeled the surface off and wrote about the unspoken side of it all?” That’s how “Plugged In,Tuned Out” was born—not an essay just about gadgets, but about how they subtly shape our emotions, relationships, creativity, and even the silence in our lives. Writing it was an experiment in seeing the ordinary through an extraordinary lens.

This relaunch isn’t just about a blog post every Sunday. It’s about showing up—with raw thoughts, refined words, and the kind of honesty that connects us beyond screens.

So, to everyone reading: thank you for being here. And if you ever have a topic that seems too normal, send it in anyway. You might be surprised what we discover when we dare to look deeper;

It’s 10:00 PM. I’ve just sat down for dinner, scrolling through notifications while the food’s cooling off. My phone buzzes with a message from a friend. I glance at it, barely reading the words. I know they’re important, but I can’t bring myself to focus. A sudden realization hits me—this is how I’ve been living for the past few years.

I’m plugged in, but I’m tuned out.

Gadgets are everywhere, seamlessly integrated into my life, as they are for most of us. But when did they stop being tools and start becoming... distractions? I’ve asked myself this question countless times, and it’s what led me to write this piece.

Is technology a boon or a bane? Can something so powerful be both life-changing and life-ruining? It's a delicate balance between connectivity and disconnection.

So, here’s the question: Are gadgets helping us live our best lives, or are we just mindlessly plugging in, only to tune out everything that truly matters?

Plugged In, Tuned Out:

Gadgets – Boon or Bane?

A deep-dive into the paradoxes of the digital age

In a world racing towards hyperconnectivity, gadgets have become the modern equivalent of fire — revolutionary, indispensable, but capable of burn if left unmastered. The question “Are gadgets a boon or a bane?” may appear outdated or over-discussed, but what remains under-addressed is how gadgets are reshaping not just what we do, but who we are.

Let’s move past the usual banter of addiction and distraction, and instead explore how gadgets are subtly altering our cognition, our relationships, and even our ethics — one notification at a time.

1. The Rise of Cognitive Offloading: Are Gadgets Making Us Forget?

One of the most silent effects of gadget dependency is cognitive offloading — the act of letting our devices remember for us. Birthdays, routes, even basic arithmetic — everything is one tap away. While it appears efficient, what we overlook is how this undermines our brain’s natural capacity to recall, reason, and retain.

Research shows that our hippocampus (the brain’s memory center) becomes less engaged when we use GPS instead of finding our own way. If we always lean on gadgets to think for us, we risk outsourcing our intelligence — reducing creativity and problem-solving skills, especially in growing minds.

Gadgets were meant to be extensions of our intelligence. Ironically, we’ve allowed them to become replacements.

2. Digital Ghosts: The Inheritance of Gadgets After Death

A rarely discussed but profoundly emotional reality is this — what happens to our gadgets when we die?

Our phones today are time capsules of who we are — carrying our last messages, private photos, notes to self, and unspoken feelings. When someone passes, their gadgets often remain as digital ghosts — silent witnesses to the life they lived.

There’s no manual for dealing with this data. Is it ethical to unlock a loved one's device? Should we treat digital diaries like paper ones — sacred and unread? Or is it a necessary closure? This opens up entirely new moral dimensions, seldom discussed, but increasingly relevant.

Gadgets don’t just store data; they now hold legacies.

3. Phantom Vibration Syndrome: The Illusion of Need

Have you ever felt your phone vibrate, only to discover it didn’t? That’s Phantom Vibration Syndrome, and it’s more common than we think — a psychological response to the brain’s hyper-expectation of digital interaction.

This syndrome points to how gadgets are not just tools anymore; they’ve become bodily extensions, reshaping our nervous system’s behavior. Our brains have adapted to anticipate gadgets so much, they now create false signals.

We don’t use gadgets. We are becoming part-gadget.

4. The Cost of Convenience: Are We Paying with Privacy?

Another unique aspect rarely emphasized enough — gadgets have blurred the line between private and public. Smartwatches tracking your heartbeat. Phones listening for “Hey Siri.” Apps collecting your steps, moods, and menstrual cycles.

The trade-off? We’ve bartered privacy for convenience. But what happens when our data becomes more valuable than our dollar? Gadgets, in the wrong hands, become surveillance tools disguised as helpers. The bane here is not the gadget itself — it’s the hidden cost that comes with dependency.

In a world where data is the new oil, we need to ask: Are we the users of gadgets, or the product being used?

5. Emotional Intelligence vs. Artificial Intelligence

While gadgets grow smarter, are we growing colder?

Smartphones allow for text replies, emoji reactions, or read receipts. But behind that ease is a growing tendency to escape emotionally demanding conversations. Why explain yourself in person when you can just send “seen”?

This habit is subtly reducing our emotional literacy — the ability to navigate conflict, read expressions, and sit through uncomfortable silences. In raising a generation glued to screens, are we also lowering the collective EQ (Emotional Quotient)?

Gadgets don’t just affect what we say — they affect what we don’t say.

6. Environmental Echoes: The Dark Side of Disposal

While gadgets feel light in hand, their environmental footprint is heavier than we realize. E-waste is the fastest-growing waste stream in the world, and only a small fraction is recycled properly.

What happens to our old phones, discarded chargers, and forgotten earbuds? Most end up in landfills, leaking toxic metals into soil and water. Even the mining of rare-earth materials for gadgets involves child labor and irreversible ecological damage — issues conveniently hidden behind shiny displays.

The boon of one’s convenience is often the bane of another’s reality.

7. The Invisible Labor Behind Smart Gadgets

Let’s also talk about the hidden workforce behind gadget functionality. Every “smart” device relies on human workers — from app moderators who filter disturbing content (at great psychological cost) to warehouse workers managing brutal shifts to get your gadgets delivered fast.

We rarely ask — who pays the price for our “one-day delivery”? Gadgets, when viewed in this light, are not just tech marvels but testimonies to systemic labor exploitation.

The real cost of “smart” gadgets is often paid by the most overlooked people in the chain.

Practical Tips for Finding the Balance

Here are a few tips on how to make technology work for you, without losing touch with what really matters:

  1. Digital Detox: Set aside time each day to unplug. This could be an hour before bed, or an entire weekend. Use this time to focus on hobbies, spending time with loved ones, or simply reflecting.

  2. Mindful Social Media Use: Social media can be a wonderful tool for connecting, but it can also be a massive source of stress. Choose to follow accounts that inspire and motivate you, and unfollow those that cause negativity. Be selective about your time on these platforms—don’t let them take over.

  3. Set Boundaries: Set clear boundaries for work-related gadgets. Don’t answer emails late at night or over the weekend. Give yourself permission to switch off.

  4. Physical Activity: Engage in activities that don’t require gadgets—like hiking, dancing, or even taking a walk in the park. These activities help you reconnect with the physical world, which can be grounding in the face of constant digital distractions.

  5. Human Connection: Prioritize face-to-face interactions over texting or social media chats. A real conversation holds a lot more value than a digital one.

Conclusion: The Truth Lies in the Balance

So, are gadgets a boon or a bane? The answer isn’t binary.

Gadgets are neither angels nor devils — they’re tools. It’s our relationship with them that defines the outcome. When we use them mindfully, they empower. When we surrender to them, they erode the very qualities that make us human.

In this age of blinking lights and never-ending scrolls, may we remember that it’s not the gadget that shines — it’s the user who must learn when to switch off.

Because ultimately, a gadget is only as wise as the hand that holds it;

As I sit here now, writing this essay, I realize that this balance is something I’ve been working towards—just like so many others. It’s easy to fall into the trap of being perpetually plugged in, but it’s also easy to become aware and make small, meaningful changes.

Gadgets will always be a part of our lives. They bring us countless benefits, connect us in ways that were once unimaginable, and enhance our productivity. But they are also capable of draining our energy, distracting us from the present, and disconnecting us from each other.

The key is to strike a balance. Use gadgets, but don’t let them control your life. Be mindful of your time, your relationships, and your well-being. After all, we may be plugged in, but we should never tune out.

So, the next time you find yourself scrolling endlessly through your phone, remember that the world is right there—just beyond your screen. And sometimes, the best connection you can make is one that doesn’t require a plug.

Take the time to unplug, tune in, and experience the beauty of the world around you!

With a bit of digital literacy,

Srilaks

To be a firefly

To Be a Firefly ~ The soft glow of a firefly is a fleeting, ethereal sight—a gentle illumination that dances through the night, defying darkness with a quiet radiance. It is a miracle of nature, a tiny spark that carries stories of wonder and nostalgia. Yet, beyond its beauty, the firefly embodies a powerful metaphor - an invitation to reflect on the nature of existence, purpose, and the pursuit of light even when surrounded by shadows. To be a firefly is to accept the impermanence of life and to embrace it wholeheartedly. The firefly’s light is not eternal; it flickers and fades, but in those brief moments, it emblazons the world. It teaches us that impact is not measured by duration but by intensity, by how deeply one can touch the world in the moments granted. This fragile insect assimilates a delicate balance between vulnerability and strength, knowing that the night is vast, yet choosing to shine regardless. What does it mean to be a firefly in a world obsessed with fi...

Prologue  — The Stop Before the Story To start with, I wish the firefly's glow that touched your heart last Sunday never dims — not in your days, not in your dreams. I hope, more than anything, that you're trying to be  the  firefly in your world. Even if your wings feel tired sometimes. This week, I’m not giving you a lesson or a listicle. I’m offering you a piece of my still-beating heart. A narrative. A theory. A truth I stumbled upon not in a lecture or a journal — but in the in-between of a very ordinary day. It was May 5. My official summer holidays were yet to begin, but the universe had other plans. Indo-Pak tensions had flared. Schools shut. Classes moved online. After my classes for the day was over, found myself holding my mom’s phone, just… scrolling. One short. Just one short. That’s all it took. An interview. A director. A question —  "What does 'Ataraxia' mean?" He didn’t know. She explained. And in those few seconds, something inside me stirr...
